High-Flow Lubrication Filtration in a Saudi Cement Plant: Duplex Cartridge Filter Case

Industrial lubrication systems in cement plants operate under demanding conditions.
Dust contamination, high oil circulation rates and continuous equipment operation can make filtration a surprisingly important part of overall maintenance.
A recent cement plant application in Saudi Arabia provides an interesting example of how filtration equipment can be adapted to these conditions.

The Application
The project involved a 5,000 TPD cement production line and the centralized lubrication system of a heavy-duty ball mill gearbox.
The lubrication system circulated approximately 1,500 L/min of ISO VG 46 gear oil.
Because the gearbox depends on continuous oil circulation for lubrication and cooling, filtration performance had to be considered together with flow requirements.

The Main Filtration Challenges
1. Heavy Dust Contamination
Cement plants naturally generate significant amounts of dust.
The Saudi project also operated in a desert environment, creating additional contamination challenges.
The existing disposable filter elements were being loaded frequently.
This created recurring replacement and logistics costs.
2. High Flow Rate
At approximately 1,500 L/min, the filtration system also had to maintain sufficient oil flow.
As a filter becomes contaminated, its resistance can increase.
For a lubrication system, excessive resistance can become an operational concern because the filter is directly located in the oil circulation path.

The Duplex Cartridge Filter Solution
The project used a YUBO SSBF-QGK200 Duplex Cartridge Filter.
The filter system incorporated:
25 μm filtration
SUS304 five-layer sintered mesh filter elements
cleanable metal filter elements
a large-flow-channel switching structure
The duplex configuration also provides a practical way to manage filter maintenance while maintaining filtration availability, depending on the operating procedure.

The project replaced disposable glass-fiber elements with stainless steel sintered mesh elements.
One important advantage is reusability.
When the elements become contaminated, they can be removed and cleaned.
The project used ultrasonic cleaning for the filter elements.
This approach can be particularly interesting for industrial plants where replacement elements need to be transported over long distances.

Project Results
According to the project case study, the upgraded filtration system addressed the previous flow-resistance concern and restored more stable lubrication operation.
The cleanable filter elements also reduced annual filter-element procurement and international shipping costs by more than 70%.
The case demonstrates that filtration cost should not always be evaluated only by the initial price of the filter.
Maintenance frequency, consumable requirements and replacement logistics can have a significant effect on the total operating cost.

What Can Other Cement Plants Learn?
There are several useful considerations when selecting filtration equipment for cement plant lubrication systems.
1. Look Beyond Micron Rating
A suitable filter needs to provide the required particle removal without creating excessive resistance.
2. Consider the Complete Flow Path
The filter element is only one part of the system.
Housing design, valve configuration and internal passages also influence flow resistance.
3. Evaluate Reusable Elements
Where contamination is frequent, cleanable metal elements may be worth evaluating against disposable alternatives.
4. Consider Maintenance Logistics
For plants located far from filter-element suppliers, transportation costs can become an important part of the filtration budget.

High-flow lubrication filtration requires a balance between filtration efficiency, pressure drop, element durability and maintenance.
The Saudi cement plant project demonstrates how a duplex cartridge filter with reusable sintered mesh elements can be used to address both filtration reliability and recurring consumable costs in a demanding industrial environment.
