What Is a Witches Hat Strainer? Cone Strainer Guide for Pipeline Filtration

What Is a Witches Hat Strainer? Cone Strainer Guide for Pipeline Filtration A witches hat strainer , also known as a cone strainer or conical filter , is a temporary filtration device used in pipelines to remove unwanted debris during system startup. It is widely used in industries such as oil and gas, water treatment, and chemical processing to protect downstream equipment. How Does a Cone Strainer Work? The cone strainer is installed between pipe flanges. As fluid flows through the pipeline, solid particles are trapped by the mesh or perforated surface, allowing clean fluid to pass through. Types of Cone Strainers Wire mesh cone strainer (fine filtration) Perforated cone strainer (coarse filtration) Hybrid cone strainer (combined structure) Why Use a Witches Hat Strainer? Prevents equipment damage Reduces maintenance costs Ensures smooth system startup Flow Direction of Cone Strainers The recommended installation is with the cone tip facing upstream. This improves filtration efficie...

What Is a Witches Hat Strainer? | Cone Strainer Manufacturer – YUBO Filter

In industrial filtration systems, especially in pump suction lines, I often see cone-shaped elements referred to as “ witches hat strainers .” For anyone unfamiliar, a witches hat strainer (also called a cone strainer ) is a conical stainless steel filter installed directly inside a pipeline. It’s typically used as a temporary or compact solution to protect downstream equipment from debris during startup or maintenance operations. Why engineers choose them: Lower pressure drop compared to flat screens Compact installation inside flanges Good debris distribution due to angled geometry Available in mesh, perforated plate, or wedge wire They're commonly used in : • Water treatment systems • Chemical processing lines • Pump protection • Resin retention setups Curious how others approach pre-filtration in tight pipeline layouts — do you prefer cone strainers, basket strainers, or temporary spool strainers? Witches Hat Strainer Flow Direction

Witches Hat Strainer Flow Direction Witches hat strainers can be installed in two ways.  One is the tip of the cone strainer can be installed downstream (downstream), and the other is installed upstream (upstream). Two factors influence the choice of installation method.  One is the accommodation space of the pipeline filtration system. In which direction is there enough space to install the temporary filter. The other is the preferred flow direction set according to the working conditions. 1. Downstream installation As shown in the figure, the temporary filter is installed with the cone pointing downstream. In this installation, debris will be captured by the tip of the filter. However, the center of the pipe is subject to higher velocity, and the velocity difference will cause particles to accumulate in the center. This may cause the cone filter to tear. Recommendation: If installed downstream, reinforce the filter to ensure mechanical stability. 2. Counter-flow installatio...
