Cartridge Filter Element Selection: 7 Factors to Check Before Ordering

Choosing a cartridge filter element for an industrial system requires more than selecting a micron rating.

The following seven factors can help organize the selection process.

For an overview of housing types, configurations and selection factors, see our Industrial Cartridge Filter Housing Guide.

1. What needs to be removed?
Start with the contaminants.
Identify the type of particles and the required filtration result before choosing the element.

2. What micron rating is required?
The micron rating should reflect the actual filtration requirement.
A finer element isn't automatically the best option. It can increase flow resistance and may require more frequent replacement when the filtration requirement does not justify it.

3. What is the process fluid?
Water, chemicals, oils and process liquids may require different filter materials.
Chemical compatibility should be checked for the filter media, support structure and sealing components.

4. What is the required flow?
Flow rate affects the required filtration area.
Higher-flow applications may require larger cartridges, greater filtration area or multiple cartridges installed in parallel.

5. What are the temperature and pressure conditions?
The cartridge element and housing should be suitable for the actual operating conditions.
Temperature, pressure and material compatibility should be checked before selecting the final configuration.

6. Which filter material is appropriate?
Different applications may use different cartridge constructions.
Depending on the process, options can include:
Pleated filter elements
Stainless steel filter elements
Sintered metal elements
Titanium rod filters
Wedge wire filter elements
The choice should be based on the process rather than simply choosing the most durable-looking material.

7. Does the cartridge fit the housing?
This is an important practical check.
Confirm:
Cartridge length
Diameter
End connection
Sealing configuration
Housing capacity
The element and housing should be treated as one filtration system.

Before requesting a cartridge filter element, prepare the following information:
Fluid + contaminants + micron rating + flow rate + temperature + pressure + material + cartridge dimensions + housing configuration.
Having these details makes it easier to identify a suitable cartridge filter element and avoid compatibility problems.
